We mentioned an old friend Malcolm Smith earlier and of course his name comes to mind when talking about Enduro riding as a multi time Gold medallist in the ISDE. We are proud to say that Malcolm along with other top names such as Randy Hawkins have been users of EBC carbon based X pads or TT pads as we call them in Europe for years. Although the carbon pad will not outlast a sintered copper brake pad it has the unique benefit of lower heat generation and transfer. When riding off road in fast dry conditions such a feature is a major benefit. In our years of listening to the faster riders we have seen cases where the rear brake rotor can be glowing RED in night rides which shows just how hot trail braking can get a rotor. Stopping this getting to the bikes hydraulics is greatly assisted by using a Carbon based pad such as the X or TT pad. Not only do they generate less heat, they transfer less heat. In Europe these pads are selected by adding the suffix TT to the part number and in the USA by adding the letter X after the FA (Freeman Automotive) series part number. The EBC X or TT pad is coded RED in paint finish and is equally happy on an ATV or a Moto X or Enduro bike and is also used in ATV Sport riding. However we caution riders using these pads in ATV use especially on rear rotors as wear life may be shorter than sintered pads originally installed in the original unit build. With the lower price point compared to sintered, millions of riders still choose the carbon pads. For Street Enduro use such as the “Paris-Dakar” style DR bikes for road use the EBC X TT or X pad is an ideal choice, it has been R 90 approved on many of such models in Europe and is safe for road use because of its ability to work effectively when hot. |

| SAFETY CONCERN – USE OF ATVS/QUADS ON PUBLIC ROADS | |||
| Also in Europe we are seeing ATV’s used for highway use, some scary quick four wheelers are flying around on public roads these days and we wonder if the riders of those machines have paid enough attention to tire and brake choices which vary tremendously to what these units were designed for. Our advice here is, its all fine and dandy you riding an ATV at 70 MPH on a street but were your brakes designed with high heat capabilities, Generally ATV brakes are designed to last well in mud water and sand but not necessarily to handle the high speeds of street use. EBC Brakes makes no warranty that its brakes will transform a machine designed essentially for off road use into a safe machine to use on the highway and all of our products are offered for OFF HIGHWAY use only. If you do use you ATV on highway no matter what brakes you use, drive carefully and slowly and use the BEST brake pads you can buy. EBC Brakes are NOT tested or approved for highway use on ATVs at this time and homologation and safety for highways use is totally the responsibility of the vehicle manufacturer. |
